Adaptive Reuse of the Old Tongmen Power Plant
(Reviving Industrial Heritage with Community and Nature)
This project proposes to uncover and reuse the buried powerhouse in a way that respects its history, while also creating a new cultural and ecological landmark that connects people with the landscape. The design highlights two main areas: The Turbine Exhibition Hall (above ground): The hall used to be the industrial heart of the powerhouse. Now, it has been restored and is a dramatic gallery where visitors can see preserved parts of the building, old machines, and interactive exhibits. This new exhibition space lets people walk through history and reconnect with the story of early hydropower and local heritage. The Immersive Experience Chamber (underground turbine pit): The buried turbine chamber and draft tube are carefully dug up and changed into an atmospheric experience. This space uses light, sound, and water effects to immerse visitors in the hidden infrastructure of energy production. It combines industrial memory with natural forces to create a sensory experience. These changes together show that the powerhouse is not just a ruin, it is a living cultural landscape.
